NUCLEAR WASTE REPOSITORY PROJECT OFFICE |
Welcome
to the
Nye County Nuclear Waste Repository Project Office
(NWRPO) website. Because Nye County is the host
county for the Yucca Mountain Project, it has legal
standing as the unit of local government with
limited jurisdiction over the site. Based on this
status, Nye County has certain rights of
participation, funding, and on-site representation
related to Yucca Mountain policies and activities.
Our
mission
is to protect the interests of the Nye County
citizens regarding the Yucca Mountain Project.
NWRPO provides independent monitoring of activities
and potential impacts related to the transport,
disposal, and storage of nuclear waste in and
through Nye County. This includes oversight of YMP
scientific, environmental, socioeconomic,
transportation, health, safety, regulatory, and
policy issues.
Over
the past decade, NWRPO has also conducted
independent scientific investigations, such as the
Early
Warning Drilling Program and
Groundwater Evaluation Program, to
collect geologic and hydrologic information
that is needed to better design a monitoring system
to protect Nye County water resources. The
Groundwater Evaluation Program is actively underway,
and the program information is frequently updated.
Please
feel free to contact us if you have any questions or
you would like more information.
